Madurai: A city hospital has claimed that a better designed imported artificial knee brought out by it would be a boon to those requiring knee replacement.

Doctors of Madurai Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology implanted such a knee on a 70-year-old woman of Dindigul, who needed total knee replacement due to acute arthritis.

They demonstated the various benefits of the knee while showing it to reporters here last night.

Michel Brax of France, part of the design team of this mobile bearing knee along with MIOT`s consultant M Muthuvelrajan had peformed the operation on the woman.

Dr.Muthuvelrajan said this artificial knee, costing around Rs 85,000 would give good mobility and help patients walk comfortably.

He said this model, manufactured in the USA, had been successfully tried out on patients at various countries.

However it was not suitable for everybody and doctors would have to study the severity of the patient`s deformity before deciding on implanting it, he said.
