New Delhi: Ahead of the World Tuberculosis Day, which falls on March 24, 2016, the government of India has rolled out Bedaquiline, the first drug for multi-drug resistant TB on Monday.
According to a report in DNA, Health Minister JP Nadda launched the drug at a high-profile meeting of international stakeholders, organised by his ministry and the World Health Organisation.
Bedaquiline, a new drug made to fight multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) was discovered and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in forty years, as reported.
It is made available in six public hospitals across the country.
The new drug is a diarylquinoline and specifically targets Mycobacterial ATP synthase, an enzyme essential for the supply of energy to Mycobacterium TB and other mycobacteria.
