Washington: Gestational diabetes islinked to serotonin -- a chemical produced by the body -- andinfluenced by the amount of protein in the mother`s diet earlyin pregnancy, a new study has revealed.
Using a genomic analysis of both pregnant andnon-pregnant mice, the scientists conducted a broad scan ofall of the genes that were turned either on or off in theislet cells during pregnancy. At the top of the list, he said, was tryptophanhydroxylase (Tph1), the enzyme that produces serotonin fromthe amino acid tryptophan. In the newly pregnant mice, thatenzyme rose exponentially. PTI
