Number of dependent older people globally likely to triple by 2050

London: By the middle of the century, the number of dependent older people in the world will nearly treble to 277 million, with almost half of those suffering from dementia, according to a new report.

Alzheimer's disease International has warned in their latest World Alzheimer Report that the cost of the disease, currently around 1 per cent of global GDP, will rise to more than 690 billion-pounds by 2050, the Independent reported.

The high income countries, which currently have the greatest proportion of Alzheimer's disease, will face the burden of the disease as the costs of long-term care are set to double over the next 50 years.
