New Delhi: India, which is struggling tocope with high Infant Mortality Rates, can reduce the deathsof children by three to four per cent by protecting women frommalaria during pregnancy. Henri van den Homberg, Chief of Health of UNICEF, saidthat malaria infection during pregnancy has the greatestimpact on the health of the baby and is one of the biggestrisk factors for their death.
"Global research shows that use of bed nets canreduce malarial parasite in the blood by 38 per cent. Morethan a quarter of low birth weight can be prevented throughuse of nets," he said. Pregnant women are entitled to free mosquito nets inthe country but doubt whether this information has reachedthem, he said. PTI
