Research on glycaemic variability in diabetes presented at ATTD in Paris

Kochi: The newer cases, complications and deaths due to diabetes, are increasing world over.

The international diabetes technology conference ATTD (Advanced Technologies and Treatmentsfor Diabetes) was held in Paris, France, from February 27 to March 2.

Two original research papers were presented from Kerala at the ATTD.

Considering the unprecedented increase in the occurrence of complications and deaths due to diabetes, clinicians and researchers are now looking forward to technological advancements in overcoming the common barriers to success in therapy.

Glycaemic Variability is measured with the help of MAGE by performing Continuous Glucose Monitoring in patients with diabetes.

This evaluation will provide close to 300 blood glucose readings in 24 hours continuously for several days.

The research presented by the Jothydev`s Diabetes Research Centre proves glycaemic variability to be associated and also differ with various therapeutic options.

The variations in blood sugar is more with the sulphonyl urea group of drugs. It also varies with varying dosages of insulin. It is least when patients are on variable basal rate with insulin pump therapy.

Another presentation from the same centre was on the behaviour and attitude of patients using insulin pump therapy for more than three to seven years.

Subjects reported a tremendous improvement in the quality of life and flexibility in lifestyles.

Eighty-one percent believed that the pump didn`t interfere with daily routine activities. Ninety per cent agreed that insulin pumps completely met their expectations, while sixty-one percent were confused about eating more due to being more confident after using an insulin pump.

The study team at Jothydev`s Diabetes Centre, Kerala comprised of Jothydev Kesavadev, Arun Shankar, Gopika Krishnan, Sunitha Jothydev, Pradeep Babu, Jayasree Lally and GeethuSanal.
