Spyglass Cholangioscopy procedure commences at Lakeshore Hospital

Kochi: Spyglass Cholangioscopy procedure for the easy detection of tumour and stones in pancreatic and bile duct has commenced at Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi, making it the first to introduce the facility.

Spyglass Cholangioscopy procedure is the new technique, which is introduced first time in kerala. The novel instrument spyglass scope (Baby scope) will aid doctors in the direct examination of the pancreas and the bile duct. So far the only way to check them was through indirect methods like CT scan, MRCP and Fluoroscopy, Dr Philip Augustine, Managing Director and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology department of the hospital told reporters here.

Spyglass Cholangioscopy procedure will reduce surgery and make diagnosis easy and helps to detect bile duct cancer and pancreatic cancer with direct visualization, biopsy and start the treatment at the earliest, he said.

Dr Roy J Mukkada, Senior Gastroenterologist said previously surgery was required to remove large stones. However, with the help of the laser in the spyglass, the bile and pancreatic stones can be fragmented easily. Any blockage due to cancerous or non cancerous growth can be determined very early and start the treatment at early stage.

The spyglass scope goes through the normal side viewing endoscope and gets in to the common bile duct and pancreatic duct and provides direct visualization for the treatment. Different types of tumours due to obstructive Jaundice, TB, and Fungal Infection also can be detected through this procedure and treat at the earliest.
