An alcoholic is a person who suffers from alcoholism. Alcoholism occurs when a person shows signs of physical addiction to alcohol (for example, tolerance and withdrawal) and continues to drink, despite problems with physical health, mental health, and social, family, or job responsibilities. Alcohol may come to dominate the person`s life and relationships.



Hence, alcoholics or heavy drunkards are often advised to quit drinking to avoid severe detrimental effects of physical and mental health. There are numerous benefits that an alcoholic can get from discontinuing drinking besides avoiding health complications.

Alcohol at moderate levels has some negative and positive effects on health. The negative effects include increased risk of liver diseases, cardiovascular diseases, malabsorption, oropharyngeal cancer, esophageal cancer and chronic pancreatitis. Chronic heavy alcohol consumption impairs brain development, causes brain shrinkage, dementia, physical dependence, increases neuropsychiatric and cognitive disorders.

Also sustained alcohol consumption can damage the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects.

On the other hand, several studies suggest that moderate intake of alcohol may have some health benefits. It may:

-reduce your risk of getting heart disease

-reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack

-probably lessen your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes

-possibly reduce your risk of diabetes

-have some beneficial effects on gastritis and cholelithiasis.

Over-consumption of alcohol is one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. One study links alcohol to 1 in every 25 deaths worldwide and that 5% of years lived with disability are attributable to alcohol consumption

Quitting alcoholism will increase one’s lifespan as people who have been drinking constantly for quite some time usually die about 15 years early. It will also eventually help them stop smoking since most smokers are also alcoholics.

Relationships are one of the most important things in our lives. However, it is very complicated for an alcoholic to create a healthy correlation with any person. Giving up drinking will surely enhance their relationships tremendously. Besides, it will also pave the way of capable to communicate more openly and honestly with everyone.

Educational programs and medical advice about alcohol abuse can help decrease alcohol abuse and its problems. Alcohol dependence needs more intensive management.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends that women have no more than 1 drink per day and men no more than 2 drinks per day. One drink is defined as a 12-ounce bottle of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or a 1 1/2-ounce shot of liquor.
