New Delhi: Ageing gracefully not only applies to humans, but to food too!

When we buy certain food items and not use them for a long duration, it's quite natural to throw them away, thinking that they might have expired.

Although most food items and beverages expire soon, there are a few which never go bad and remain as fresh and edible as the day you bought them. Some even get better with age!

Below are five such food items and drinks that never expire! Have a look.

1. Rice:

Bought that bag of a rice a good number of days or weeks ago? No need to throw it away, just yet. Undoubtedly, it might have a thick layer of dust covering it, but below that, the rice is as fresh as a daisy. You need to wash the rice thoroughly before cooking, in any case!

2. Honey:

The sweet, golden syrup of goodness never goes bad. It can be preserved in completely edible form for years! Although the change in its texture and colour is noticeable after a while, its shelf-life remains untouched. Why, you ask? It's because of its fructose content.

3. Sugar:

Those with a sweet-tooth may already know this. Yes, sugar also retains its shelf-life, because it does not support growth of bacteria. However, it has the tendency to become hard like a rock and/or become a big lump, if exposed to moisture. Therefore, make sure you store sugar in airtight containers.

4. Salt:

Sea salt, kosher salt and table salt, all three varieties are always good to be used, even if kept lying for a long time. It won't go bad even if you never use it.

5. Hard drinks:

Last but not the least, your favourite company for parties and get togethers, that is, hard drinks only get better with age. No need to be in a rush to finish those bottles now, because hard liquor like scotch, whiskey, rum, etc., never go bad, even if passed down from generations!
