Rice is the staple food for many nations across the world. It is estimated that more than 90% of the world's rice is consumed in Asia alone, where it is a staple food for a majority of the population.
Brown rice is thought to be more nutritious than white rice. White rice intake, in particular, has been linked to a higher risk of diabetes.
But, this plain white rice can be made much healthier and tastier as well by adding some flavourful ingredients like spices, broths, vegetables and herbs.
Here are five simple yet healthy ways to make white rice:
Step 1: Cook or steam rice in water and flavour it with lemon juice or soy sauce. This is one of the simplest and easiest ways to make. You can also steam white rice in low-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth for better taste as well as healtk benefits.
Step 2: Take fresh mushrooms and saute them in olive oil for few minutes. Now, Add sauteed mushrooms to steamed white rice. Mushroomas are a healthy source of food and are rich in antioxidants as well.
Step 3: One can add sauteed garlic and onions to white rice to make it more tasty and healthy. Gralic and onions are flavourful antioxidant foods.
Step 4: Vegetables like carrots, tomatoes and green peas are an ideal choice. Cut carrots into small pieces and add them into white rice along with green peas. This will not only give you good taste, but will also boost the health benefits. These foods are known to be rich in vitamins A and C and calcium.
Step 5: Spices such as cumin seeds (jeera) are a healthy choice to use it as a flavour. Using a pan, heat oil and cumin seeds and let it temper. Then add curry leaves, salt and other spices as you like and stir it for two minutes.
Now, add lemon juice and cook it for a minute before adding boiled white rice. Stir and cook it for 2-3 minutes.
