More roughage in diet could help ease symptoms of hay fever sufferers

Melbourne: A diet full of "roughage" - fibrous fruit and vegetables bursting with vitamin C and folic acid - can ease symptoms and reduce inflammation associated with seasonal allergies, researchers have suggested.

University of Newcastle allergy expert Associate Professor Glenn Reeves has said that sufferers need to be proactive with their medication and eat foods that stimulated the immune system.

Dietician Simone Austin said the key was foods high in "probiotics and prebiotics".

She said probiotics such as yoghurt contained so-called good bacteria while prebiotics had antihistamine properties and reduced inflammation.

"If you have a poor digestive system your immune system will always be under stress," the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.

"The best thing you can do for allergies is keep your digestive and immune systems up,” she added.
