London: Most of the half-baked warnings about the dangers of eating bread are just myths and people are missing out on vital vitamins and minerals by removing it from their daily diet, experts have warned.
Consumption of bread has fallen after two decades of claims that bread causes bloating, sparks weight gain, and that wheat allergies are on the rise.
The research was carried out by nutrition scientist Dr Aine O’Connor, based at the British Nutrition Foundation in central London.
The study found that standard sliced white bread had been unfairly “demonised” by health campaigners and TV nutritionists.
Dr O’Connor found genuine wheat allergies were not up, only the number of people who incorrectly diagnosed one themselves.
“Health professionals need to dispel the myths. Bread is an important source of nutrition,” the Sun quoted her as saying.
