Human brain encounters over 100,000 words a day: Study
London: Having problem in concentration?
Well, it could be because of the over exposure to information
that is enough to overload a laptop, says a new study.
With increasing exposure to media in modern times, our
brains are bombarded with more than 100,000 words a day that
affects our memory and even ruins concentration, said the
study from University of San Diego, California.
The number of words one hears or listens a day is
equivalent to 34 gigabytes of information - or a fifth of the
storage capacity of a notepad computer, it said.
"I think, one thing is clear: our attention is being
chopped into shorter intervals and that is probably not good
for thinking deeper thoughts," co-author Roger Bohn was quoted
as saying by The Telegraph.
The researchers estimated the amount of information
people are exposed to inside and outside the home, for
activities other than work.
And the `day` takes into account only waking hours
outside work - meaning the true figure is much higher.
Trips to the cinema, listening to the radio, talking
on the phone, playing video games, surfing the Internet and
reading the newspaper were all factored in to create a
"snapshot of the information revolution".
There are concerns that our brains are being
overloaded and even that their structure is being changed by
the flood of data.
