Laproscopic surgery helps woman get rid of multiple fibroids
Mumbai: Like any other married woman, a
city-based BPO employee was overjoyed when she learnt of her
first pregnancy after marriage. But her hopes of bearing a
child came crashing when she was diagnosed with fibroids.

However, two city-based gynaecologists gifted her the
ability to conceive after she encountered several impediments
for eight long years.
The 31-year-old Malini Sharma (name changed) was
diagnosed to have large multiple fibroids when she sought
treatment for difficulty in conceiving. She underwent an open
surgery for removal of fibroids.

"I consulted five to six gynaecologists in the city
when I conceived six years back. I also had three
miscarriages," Sharma said.

But due to the presence of large innumerable fibroids,
along with the fear of losing the uterus, which was of seven
months pregnancy size, the procedure was abandoned.

Later on consultation with an internationally trained
city-based doctor and his colleague, Sharma underwent a
laproscopic removal of multiple fibroids at a suburban
hospital.
"We encountered innumerable fibroids occupying all the
walls of the uterus, which were huge ranging from 8-10 cm in
diameters,” Dr Uddhav Raj, a Gynaecological Endoscopic and
Pelvic Oncosurgeon told reporters here.

"These fibroids were inside the body of the uterus,
making the removal through laproscopy challenging," he said.

The fibroids were removed from the abdominal cavity by
an indigenous electronic machine known as ‘Fibro Extract’
developed by Dr Uddhav and his colleague Dr Piyush Goyal.

"The equipment is cost-effective and can speedily
remove multiple fibroids," Dr Goyal said.

The doctors sutured the various incisions on the
uterus with surgical precision after which in total, 24
fibroids, weighing 980 grams, were removed successfully.

The surgery takes place for three to four hours
and it costs from 50 to 60 thousand, the doctors said.

Post surgery, Sharma was discharged the very next
day of her operation, which took place on November 20.

"I’m feeling much better now as I got rid of this
major problem and I’m looking forward to conceive very soon,"
said an elated Sharma, who was the first patient in the city
to undergo the surgery.
