Motherhood-related deaths down in India by 17%
New Delhi: India has in the last five years managed to bring down the rate of deaths among women during delivery by 17 percent, recording 212 deaths due to motherhood causes for one lakh child births.
But it is still far away from the United Nation`s millennium development goal of 109.
The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) figures for 2007-09 were released here Thursday by India`s Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India C. Chandramouli.
The ratio for the period 2004-06 was 254 deaths, thus marking a drop of 42 points in 2007-09.
As per the latest results of Sample Registration Survey (SRS), Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Jharkhand have registered a significant decline of 67 points, along with Assam, in MMR when compared to the figures of 2004-2006.
The highest decline in MMR was observed in Assam (90 points) followed by Uttar Pradesh/Uttarakhand (81 points), Rajasthan (70 points), Madhya Pradesh/Chhattisgarh (66 points), Bihar/Jharkhand (51 points) and Orissa (45 points).
Punjab and Haryana have done remarkably well to reduce the MMR and reverse the increase observed during the period 2001-2003 to 2004-2006.
Kerala continues to show outstanding performance recording 81 MMR. While Tamil Nadu recorded 97 MMR, Maharashtra is a close third with 104 MMR.
