PGIMER`s first liver transplant patient dies
Chandigarh: After undergoing the first liver transplant surgery in the history of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here last month, 49-year-old Vijay Kumar Khurana has died, doctors said Sunday.

Khurana, a resident of Saharanpur town in Uttar Pradesh, had undergone the surgery April 15 and was keeping well for the next four-five days.
Hospital authorities had called a press conference to announce this feat April 20 but ironically, on the same day, Khurana suffered a brain haemorrhage. After this, his situation started deteriorating and he slipped into a coma.

Doctors had been literally on their toes for the last couple of weeks as they tried every possible way to save Khurana`s life.

"His blood pressure suddenly shot up and he suffered brain haemorrhage. His fluctuating blood pressure made our job very difficult," said a PGIMER doctor Sunday.

"We tried our level best to save his life. There was a chest infection that further infected his other body organs, leading to his death on Saturday," he added.

Various sections of PGIMER were involved in the nearly 10-hour surgery.

"This is a big loss for our family. Doctors were very helpful and they were even coming on their off days to inquire about my brother`s health," said Raj Kumar Khurana.
