London: Tangy fruits can help a person stay
slim and prevent from putting on that extra weight, a new
study has found.
During a mouse-model experiment, researchers from
University of Milan found that rodents which were fed a
high-fat diet stopped piling on weight when given juice of the
blood orange.
In contrast, mice fed sweeter oranges gained significant
amount of fat, the Daily Mail reported.
Researchers believe that the fat-busting powers of the
fruit may be partly due to its high levels of anthocyanin -- a
red pigment that gives the orange its deep colour.
Anthocyanin is a type of antioxidant, a natural chemical
that helps ward off disease.
The juice damages the fat accumulation ability of
adipocytes cells -- found mostly around the waistline and
absorb fat from food to store as energy, researchers told the
International Journal of Obesity.
