Shimla: Denying seeking "political vendetta", Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister P K Dhumal on Tuesday said it was not correct to say that his government was only expediting political cases of corruption.
Replying to a question from Congress members, he said
that the conviction rate in corruption cases has shown
remarkable improvement during the BJP rule as compared to the
previous Congress government.
Denying that the cases were being instituted on political
considerations, Dhumal said "not a single case has been
registered on political basis and the government is not
unleashing political vendetta".
He said that the government was taking several measures
to curb corruption and has passed the Bill providing for
attachment of property amassed by corrupt means and the assent
of President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil was awaited.
Special courts would be set up under the said Act to deal
effectively with corruption, he added.
He said that the conviction rate has gone up from 13.4
per cent to 18.8 per cent during past four years and informed
the house that the accused had been convicted in 29 cases
registered by vigilance and anti-corruption bureau while the
accused in 125 cases were exonerated from the charge by the
court during year 2011.
Charging previous Congress governments with going slow in
investigation and prosecution of corruption cases, Dhumal said
that during Congress rule only three people were convicted and
20 persons were acquitted in 2006 while in 2007 only one
person was convicted and 17 others were acquitted.
