Shimla: About 50,000 girl students of state -run schools in tribal and remote areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti and Pangi were trained by police in unarmed combat skills to make them self-reliant.
Himachal ADGP, SR Ojha, who is also the chairman and nodal officer of a committee that has been constituted to oversee the training, said that about 250 trained officers of the police, including both male and female personnels, for this purpose.
The implementation of the scheme was difficult in rural, remote and tribal areas as neither adequate fund nor trainers were available in?these areas, he said adding that the strength of girls was less due to difficult hill topography and terrain and clubbing of schools was also not feasible as they are located at long distances.
The training has been introduced as an optional subject in the schools. The cops are teaching combat skills to girls including punching, kicking and defending themselves in situations when the number of attackers is more than one.
The project, which is part of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan of Union Human Resource Development Ministry was started in March this year after signing of the MOU between the police and education department.
