HP: Six-time Congress MLA passes away

Six-time Congress MLA from Himachal Pradesh Prem Singh died due to a heart attack at his native village Mania Rajana in Sirmaur district Friday morning.

Pradesh Prem Singh died due to a heart attack at his native village Mania Rajana in Sirmaur district Friday morning.

He was 63.

Singh, who would have celebrated his 64th birthday today,
had a massive heart attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital
where he died, family sources said.

He is survived by his wife Vidya Devi, daughter Rekha and
son Viney.

His cremation will take place in Dadahu village on the
banks of river Giri Ganga.

A former Chief Parliamentary Secretary in the V B Singh
government during 2003-07, he was elected to Himachal Assembly
for the first time in 1982 and retained the Renuka (reserve)
constituency seat in 1985, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2007.

During a political career spanning about 30 years, he tasted defeat only once in 1990.

He was scheduled to start a public campaign from his
constituency today.

Only yesterday, he had submitted his resignation from
the select committee to consider the HP land Ceiling
(Amendment) Bill after the Congress party decided not to
associate with the committee.

With his sudden death, the strength of the 68-member Assembly has reduced to 66.

Another member, Hari Naraian Saini of the BJP, had died,
two months ago and the by-election was yet to be held.

Chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Union Minister V B
Singh, HPCC president Kaul Singh, Leader of the Opposition
Vidya Stokes and other senior leaders have expressed grief
over the death.
