New Delhi: Citing a "major military threat" from China, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on Saturday asked the Centre to set up a Himalayan Regiment in the army which should be capable of fighting in difficult hilly trains.

Speaking at the National Development Council (NDC) meeting here, Dhumal said "India faces a major military threat from neighbouring China and the Indian Army should be made fully capable of fighting in the tough terrain hilly regions.

"And with this objective a separate army regiment drawn from youths of hilly areas should be set up in the army so as its soldiers are well conversant with tough geography and topography of the region and are also prepared mentally and physically to encounter the enemy in this region", Dhumal said.

He requested the central government to make suitable provision for setting up the Himlayan Regiment in the 12th Plan.

Hey , I think India is capable to defend its territory including Tibet which should be part of India now . This Chinese Issues really bother me . They just want war/occupation and they dont listen to any one . India should concentrate on Artillery and special forces . Chinese dont have such Terrain so they will suck dix .

We should start installing Radar & SAM at the entire border area along with China and start monitoring and petrolling our Air space, like wise the Russian & Nato country do along their enemy border. This will give a signal to the Chinese and will also confirmed our presence on the borders of our land.

Great idea. You need More than that.1/2 Division should be local People with prepositioned supplies in deep tunnels.Theae should be another 1/2 Division Regular Mountain Army with Artilary support.Additionly there should be another1/2 Division of Tibetian Refugees who come from that area. They canbe guides and have a great reason to liberate Tibet. One should consider a thousand people fromXianiag. They do not like chinese either.India need to consider an offensive doctrine. It will take about 10 years to achieve that level of readiness.

Recruiting locally from areas which are especially high altitude and difficult terrain will make the Indian Army more effective.Soldiers defending their home state will definitely be more effective.
