Shimla: The police, probing the Himachal
Pradesh University marksheet scam, has arrested the key
accused and its suspected mastermind.
"The arrest of Pankaj alias Gurvinder, mastermind behind
the scam from his residence in Phase IV of New Shimla is a
major breakthrough and the racket would be unearthed soon",
Additional DGP (CID) I D Bhandari said.
Pankaj was allegedly using his house virtually as a
factory to prepare fake marksheets on a large scale for both
school and college level and various gadgets, including a
laptop, printer, scanner, special paper used in making
marksheets and the seal of the Controller of Examination, to
give the impression of complete authenticity, Bhandari added.
The police also found some fake seals of the Income
Tax Department from his house.
"The hard disk of his laptop was being sent for forensic
examination to know the details of the students who had
benefitted from this illegal act, whether at the college
level or school level", he said.
Though Pankaj claimed he was operating single-handedly,
the police had already arrested, Nagesh, a resident of
Jagatkhana near Rampur, who had allegedly helped the
mastermind in searching for interested students.
The investigtions into the scam, which came to light
soon after the examination scam in School Board, was entrusted
to CID after a fake certificate of a BA-II student from Rampur
was seized by the computer and examination branch of
Himachal Pradesh University.
A CID team headed by DSP Brajesh Sood investigated the
case to get the kingpin booked.
Taking lead from the clues provided by him, the CID is
also likely to investigate the cases of fake marksheet at the
Board of School Education level, he added.
