Over 100 tourists stranded in Himachal due to snow

Over 100 tourists have been stranded in HP`s Kinnaur district after roads were closed due to heavy snowfall.

Shimla: Over 100 tourists, mostly from West Bengal, have been stranded in Himachal Pradesh`s Kinnaur district after roads were closed due to heavy snowfall, an official said on Friday.

All of the tourists are fine but there is an acute shortage of food and necessary items.

"Around 100 tourists have been stranded at Kalpa town since yesterday (Thursday) as most of the road links have been closed due to heavy snowfall," a government official posted at Rekong Peo, the district headquarters town, said over phone.

He said the area recorded more than five feet of snow in the past two days.

"There is an acute shortage of food. There is no electricity and the communication system has been badly hit," he added.

The picturesque Kalpa, some 25 km from state capital Shimla, is frequently visited by tourists.

Reports said around 20 tourists are also stranded in the Sangla Valley in the district due to massive snow.

Government officials here said it might take a day or two for tourists to move to their destinations as the road connectivity between Rekong Peo and Shimla has been badly hit at several locations.

The Met department said the entire belt in Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Chamba districts witnessed heavy snowfall since Thursday morning.
