New Delhi: Chinese telecom firm ZTE on Thursday said it will launch smartphones, based on Android operating system in the first quarter of this fiscal.
As a member of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), ZTE will work with its members to contribute to the development of Android platform, ZTE said in a statement.
Android is a mobile operating system, initially developed by Android Inc, a firm later purchased by Google.
It was later developed by the OHA, a business alliance of 50 firms including HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung and LG.
Android, the flagship software of the alliance, competes against other mobile platforms from Apple, Microsoft, Nokia and Research In Motion. The platform allows developers to make applications, independent of service operators and device manufacturers.
"ZTE is committed to invest in this innovative platform to meet the market demand. It has invested heavily in the R&D of Android smartphones during last year and in the first quarter of this year, ZTE will launch smartphones based on the Android platform," ZTE General Manager (Smartphones) Lin Qiang said.
