3 killed as truck mounts pavement in UP

Three persons were today killed and two others seriously injured when a truck mounted the pavement in Jajmau area, police said.

Kanpur: Three persons were today killed and two others seriously injured when a truck mounted the pavement in Jajmau area, police said.

The incident took place when the truck, in order to avoid collision with an auto rickshaw, mounted the pavement, killing three persons, said Pavitra Mohan Tripathi, circle officer of Cant police station.

While two persons were killed on the spot, another person died during treatment, he said.

The deceased were identified as Sher Ali (70), Shahid (42) and Anwar (38). Those injured include auto driver Suraj and one other person, he added.

As per preliminary investigations, brakes of the truck had failed due to which it collided with the boundary wall of a bridge, police said adding that the driver has been arrested.

Following the mishap, angry locals tried to vandalise the truck and block the roads but were pacified by SP (city) Prabhakar Chaudhary and other officials.

The Kanpur-Lucknow highway remained blocked for a while. Police forces have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
