New Delhi: The Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Monday told Supreme Court that the Centre is withdrawing its appeal against the Allahabad HC judgement in AMU minority status case.
The AG told the court that he is making statement only on behalf of the Centre and not AMU which has also filed an appeal.
Previous Centre government, alongwith AMU, had filed a special leave petition in the top court challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict, holding that the university cannot have minority status as the Supreme Court judgment in 1967 in the Azeez Basha rejecting conferment of minority status had attained finality.
Earlier, on January 11, Attorney Journal Mukul Rohatagi had told the court that the NDA government did not support the idea of a state-funded minority institution in a secular state, sparking off a controversy.
AMU Vice Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah had earlier this month met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought the NDA governments support in restoring the varsitys minority status.
