Consider plea for Bharat Ratna to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Madras HC tells Centre

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Union Home Ministry to consider a plea seeking conferment of Bharat Ratna on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

A plea was filed in Madras High Court by KK Ramesh, managing trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation, seeking an order to confer the precious award to Bose. It also sought to declare Bose's birth anniversary on January 23 as a public holiday, a request that was turned down by the court.

The petitioner asserted that Indian citizens want to honour Subhas Chandra Bose and no one should forget the sacrifice of the great freedom fighter.

The bench told PTI, "The matter is to be considered only by the Union Home Secretary. Therefore, we do not propose to go into the merits of the case."
