'Dams in states neighboring Nepal did not suffer any damage in earthquake'

Dams located in states bordering Nepal did not suffer any damage due to the recent earthquake, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has said.

New Delhi: Dams located in states bordering Nepal did not suffer any damage due to the recent earthquake, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has said.

An inspection was conducted to check any damages to the dams in the wake of tremors in states that share borders with Nepal and it was found that they are out of danger, top CWC officials said.

"Our officials carried out inspection in the dams situated in states including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh after earthquake struck neighboring Nepal. It has been found that they did not suffer any damages," they said.

While the April 25 quake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale, epicentred in Nepal, left a trail of massive destruction in the Himalayan country, tremors were also felt in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

CWC, a premier technical organisation functioning under the Union of Ministry Water Resources, maintains the 'National Register of Large Dams' comprising the list of over 5,100 large dams situated across the country.

As per the list, 115 large dams are located in Uttar Pradesh, followed by 23 in Bihar, and 16 in Uttarakhand.

A large dam is classified as one with a maximum height of more than 15 metres from its deepest foundation to the crest.

However, dams between 10 and 15 metres in height from its deepest foundation are also included in the classification of a large dam provided it complies with one of the five conditions, including capacity of the reservoir formed by the dam is not less than one million cubic metres and dams with unusual design.

Meanwhile, two barrages situated on the Indo-Nepal border across Kosi and Gandak rivers in Bihar are also safe, a state government official said.

When contacted, Bihar Water Resources Secretary Dipak Kumar Singh told PTI on the phone that inspections conducted in Birpur and Valmiki Nagar barrages after the earthquake has established that no damage was found to them.
