New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called up President Pranab Mukherjee, after and enquired about his well being after an SUV in President's motorcade skidded off a hilly road in Gorabari near Sonada in Darjeeling hills, West Bengal.

Both Mukherjee and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose car was also part of the motorcade, are safe. The incident happened when President, who was on his way to Bagdogra to catch a flight to Delhi after a four-day trip to the region.

The rescue operation was supervised by Banerjee whose cavalcade was following the President's convoy.

Because of low visibility due to rains and fog, the SUV, Mahindra Scorpio, which was third car in the convoy carrying Security Liaison Officer of the Intelligence Bureau and local police officials, skidded off the road and rolled down the deep gorge before getting stuck in trees near Sonada, 30 kms from Darjeeling.
