Demonetisation: Mamata Banerjee slams PM Modi, says common man is not 'sleeping peacefully', currency ban will trigger recession

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is leading the Opposition charge against Centre's demonetisation move, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and said that his government's currency ban has made millions of countrymen restless in the past few days.

The firebrand Trinamool Congress leader tweeted, ''PM's remarks is an insult to commoners and in bad taste.''

She also suggested the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre to take adequate steps to improve the situation and ease the burden on the common man.

My humble suggestion is not to hit the common people like this, she said in another tweet.

Making her point home, the TMC leader said while the masses have been victimised and crushed under the weight of demonetisation, many economists are now predicting the onset of recession.

"This will be a killer for the common people. Already a staggering Rs 1.5 lakh crore of GDP has been lost by the economy in only six days," she said in another tweet.

The remarks from West Bengal Chief Minister came minutes after the PM Modi said in Ghazipur that the common man is least bothered and sleeping peacefully while the corrupt and the rich are buying sleeping pills because of the Centre's demonetisation move.

In an emotional speech, the Prime Minister however said that the inconvenience faced by the common man due to demonetisation will not go in vain.

Addressing his first public rally in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh post the demonetisation drive, Modi said, "I want to assure you that your inconveniences will not go in vain."

He also flagged off the weekly Shabd Bhedi Superfast Express from Ghazipur to Kolkata and inaugurated the newly constructed perishable cargo centre in Ghazipur.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for doubling of the railway track between Ghazipur and Ballia, rail-cum-road bridge on the river Ganga on Mau-Tadighat rail route.
