Doordarshan plans to launch new channel exclusively for Northeast

New Delhi: Union minister Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said Doordarshan will launch a new channel dedicated to the Northeast named “Arun Prabha”.

The channel will be launched in January.

"The channel would show the richness, variety and diversity of local culture and would seamlessly integrate Northeast with the entire country," IANS quoted the Minister for Information and Broadcasting as saying.

The made the announcement during a speech at the 28th State Information Ministers Conference at Vigyan Bhawan.

He also said that the government will provide 90 percent subsidy to the Northeastern states and 75 percent subsidy for other states in setting up community radio stations.

He said that the community radio stations are an extraordinary medium which disseminates information in localized content.

"States should focus on this new initiative as it would not only enhance revenue but also boost tourism in the state," IANS quoted Naidu as saying.
