Kolkata: Eastern Railway on Tuesday announced 222 special trains to be run during the Durga Puja festival and said that emphasis would be given on tight security arrangements and cleanliness factors.
"The train services include premium, express and 'jan sadharan' and will be run between September 26 to November 18 to cope with the rush of passengers," Eastern Railway General Manager RK Gupta told a press conference here.
"Of these trains, 148 will originate or terminate in Eastern Railway zone and the other 74 will pass through the zone," Gupta said.
"These trains will have a total capacity of 1,79,900 berths or seats and would connect destinations like Mumbai, Delhi, New Jalpaiguri and Guwahati," he said, adding that new desitnations like Puri, Dibrugarh and Raxaul have been included in this schedule.
He said that of the special trains, 36 would run between Howrah/Sealdah and Delhi and 32 between Howrah/Sealdah and New Jalpaiguri.
Apart from these, to cater to revellers during the Durga Puja days, 64 extra EMU local trains would be run from Sealdah division and 24 EMU services would be offered from Howrah division and these would be run between 4 pm and 4 am in the morning.
The ER general manager said that elaborate security arrangements would be at place to prevent any untoward incident.
"All puja special trains will be escorted by police guards. We will intensify anti-sabotage checking and dog squads will be deployed," he said adding that railway intelligence units will maintain close liasion with state agencies.
Gupta said that all late night trains, specially the ladies' compartments, would have mobile escorts.
He said the Eastern Railway has chalked out a comprehensive scheme to ensure cleanliness at stations, trains and tracks.
