Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called on doctors to focus on wellness, well-being and preventive healthcare.

Speaking at the 34th convocation ceremony of PGIMER, Chandigarh here, PM Modi said, “We should focus not on the disease but the ill.”

“Focus is now on wellness. World is looking at preventive healthcare and this was seen when the world marked yoga day so enthusiastically,” he said, adding, “I feel physiotherapists would be even better in their work if they learn yoga.”

The Prime Minister noted that “technology driven medical science in assuming importance” these days.

“Earlier it was about the syllabus but now, more than books you are connected with lives,” he said.

While congratulating the passouts for “beginning a new phase in their lives”, PM Modi sought to remind the 'future doctors' that “today, your education is not ending. Nor is your learning ending today through this ceremony.”

Calling on them to undertake social service through this noble profession, Modi said, “We have become what we have due to the contribution of so many people. We have become what we have due to 'Samajh' (society), not sarkar.”
