New Delhi: Newly appointed Foreign Secretary Dr S Jaishankar on Thursday called on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the national capital.

Swaraj and Jaishankar greeted each other cordially and exchanged pleasantries. The meeting was a routine one.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar took charge as the Foreign Secretary, replacing Sujatha Singh, whose tenure has been curtailed by nearly seven months.

"As I take over, I am happy to work with all of you. I am honoured that I have been assigned with this responsibility," said the former Indian Ambassador to the US.

The decision was taken on Wednesday night by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, Jaishankar will have tenure of two years from the date he assumes charge.

Meanwhile, Sujatha Singh's two-year tenure was to end in August this year.
