Lucknow: His political career story has many similarities to PM Narendra Modi's life journey!
Like PM Narendra Modi, Keshav Prasad Maurya too was a tea-seller.
Also, he was a VHP, RSS volunteer like the PM.
Not only this, Keshav Prasad Maurya used to sell newspapers too.
Why did BJP chose him over others?
It was nothing less than a surprise for several BJP veterans when the saffron party chose Keshav Prasad Maurya over others, that too ahead of crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Maurya belongs to the Kushwaha community (an OBC). The community has a sizeable presence in Uttar Pradesh at around 8%.
It was a first win for the saffron party from Phulpur (once held by Jawaharlal Nehru), when Maurya emerged victorious on the Lok Sabha seat.

Insiders say his elevation is part of a well-thought out plan of BJP.
In all likelihood, BJP will keep its hardcore Hindutva agenda alive during the run-up to the 2017 state polls, however, Maurya says that the UP elections will be fought on the development issue.
BJP, on Friday, had replaced the chiefs of five of its state units.
