Happy birthday: Narendra Modi wishes China's Xi Jinping amid NSG deadlock

New Delhi: Despite the fact that China vehemently opposed India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, with the utmost humility, extended birthday wishes to Chinese President Xi Jinping who turned 63 today.

The PM posted the greeting in Mandarin on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of the microblogging website Twitter.

“Birthday greetings to President Xi Jinping. I pray for his long life and good health,” read the message.

Modi is regular in wishing leaders in the country as well as abroad.

The Indian and Chinese leaders are likely to meet at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at Tashkent on June 23-24.

Notably, a Chinese daily had on Tuesday said that India's entry into the NSG will worsen the security situation in South Asia.

"China's concern about India's inclusion into the NSG comes out of the security dynamic in South Asia," the state-run Global Times said in a commentary.

China has emerged as the major stumbling block to India's membership of the NSG.

The plenary meeting of the NSG, a 48-member bloc, is expected to be held in Seoul on June 24.
