New Delhi: Describing Hindi as the symbol of social and cultural unity of India, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said the language has a significant role in connecting the government and the people.

"In a vast country like India, where many languages are spoken, Hindi has its own special position. It is the symbol of our social and cultural unity and is the main connecting language between the people. Hindi also has a significant role in connecting the government and the people," he said at a function, 'Rajbhasha Samaroh', organised by the Home Ministry.

Giving awards to different ministries and departments for their initiatives for promoting Hindi, the President expressed the hope that the 'Rajbhasha Awards' would further encourage people to adopt the language.

Mukherjee said that in order to ensure that social welfare schemes and programmes are successful, it is necessary to see to it that they are presented to the people in their own language.

"Therefore, Hindi and other Indian languages should be used in a manner that the information and benefit of the development schemes can easily reach the common man," he said.

The President expressed happiness that the use of Hindi is gaining popularity on various media such as Internet, mobile phones, etc.

"We must make all efforts to maximise the use of Hindi," he said.
