New Delhi: Reacting to the sexual harassment controversy that has hit his St Stephen's College, Principal Valson Thampu on Wednesday said that if allegations against the accused are proved to be true, then he should be awarded highest punishment.

“If the accused is guilty of sexual harassment, he should be given highest punishment,” Thampu told ANI.

“But I am not the one to decide it. I am not an investigative agency,” he, however, added.

Thampu's remarks came amid allegations that he is trying to protect the accused.

“There have been allegations against Mahatma Gandhi, Jesus Christ, Prophet Muhammad... there have been allegations against all reformers,” he said further, adding “anyone who does not conform to existing expectations and practices will become controversial”.

St Stephen's professor Satish Kumar has been accused of molestation by a PhD student working under his supervision.

Kumar has now resigned from the post of Bursar and the college's Governing Body today made a new appointment for the administrative position.

Kumar, an Assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, was yesterday denied anticipatory bail by a Delhi court in connection with the case.
