New Delhi: Smriti Irani, who has been shifted from the HRD Ministry to Textiles portfolio, on Wednesday took charge of her new assignment.
Speaking to reporters after taking charge, the high-profile minister said it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream to boost the textiles industry and that she would work to realise that dream.
“It is PM Modi's dream to boost the textile industry. I look forward to working for it,” she said.
In Tuesday's Union Cabinet reshuffle, change in Irani's portfolio came as a big surprise and shock.
Many in political circles are seeing the outspoken minister's move from HRD to Textiles as demotion.
When asked by reporters whether she would be the Bharatiya Janata Party's face in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, Irani said, “Kuch to log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna (people would comment, it is their job to comment).”
She further quipped, “You (reporters) all have come here in the Textiles Ministry in such huge numbers probably for the first time. This indicates whichever department I go to, our relationship would continue.”
