Nay Pyi Taw (Myanmar): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attended the 12th ASEAN-India Summit here. He is also meeting several heads of state and government on the sidelines of the multilateral event. Here are the live updates from the Myanmarese capital:

22: 00 pm: Following is the picture taken at the end of first day of ASEAN summit.

 

21: 00 pm: The United States President Barack Obama met PM Modi at Gala dinner. He also greeted Modi and said that he is a man of action.

 

18: 30 pm: During their meeting, PM Modi called Suu Kyi a 'symbol of democracy' and also said that she will always be welcomed to visit India and that we are willing to host her at an appropriate time, said Syed Akbaruddin, MEA spokesperson .

18: 08 pm: India is my second home, says Suu Kyi while meeting PM Modi.

17: 17 pm: PM Modi is meeting with Myanmar Opposition leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

 

17:06 pm: Republic of Korea President Park Geun-hye has invited PM Modi to Seoul to enhance cooperation.

2:15 pm: Speaking at the ASEAN-India Summit, PM Narendra Modi also took a swipe at China over South China Sea disputes, saying, “All have responsibility that we follow international law and norms on maritime issues, as we do in (the) realm of air.”  

2:00 pm: External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin has been tweeting about what PM Narendra Modi said at the ASEAN-India Summit.

12:45 pm: PM Narendra Modi and other leaders have arrived to attend the ASEAN-India Summit.

10:55 am: Thai PM Prayut lauds India's 'Act East' approach, says it is important for the ASEAN. He also appreciates 'Make in India' policy. “I fully agree and admire the concept of @makeinindia_ it can drive the economy. Thailand can apply it for its economy too,” the PMO's Twitter handle quotes the Thai PM as telling Modi. PM Modi adds “there are several possibilities of cooperation in economic sphere”.

 

10:45 am: PM Modi invites his Thai counterpart to visit India. Also informs him that Indian External Affairs Minister will attend the Sanskrit Conference being organised in Thailand.

10:40 am: PM Narendra Modi is now meeting his Thailand counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha. PM Modi expresses confidence that the relations between the two countries will become stronger. “I congratulate you on becoming the PM of Thailand. Am sure our relations will become stronger,” PM Modi tells Prayut.

10:03 am: PM Narendra Modi has joined photo-sharing social networking website, Instagram. He informed this via his Twitter handle.

9:20 am: Modi informs Malaysian PM about his government's Make in India initiative and invites Malaysian companies to India. “I am giving lot of emphasis to @makeinindia_ & want to invite Malaysian companies to come to India. There are lot of opportunities,” the PMO's Twitter handle quoted Modi as telling Najib Razak. “Malaysia and India have worked together in the past. We can take this much further under your leadership,” Modi tells Najib.

 

9:10 am: Malaysian PM Najib Razak tells PM Modi that he wants Indian companies to look at opportunities in Malaysia. Further, Najib Razak invites PM Modi to visit Malaysia. The Indian PM extends a similar invite to his Malaysian counterpart.

9:00 am: PM Narendra Modi meets Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak, tells him, “I congratulate you for the reform initiatives you have taken not just for governance but also for opening the economy.” He says further: “Malaysia worked a lot on affordable housing. We want every Indian to have a home by 2022. Have seen your companies can work in this area.”

 

8:30 am: PM Narendra Modi will meet his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak shortly. He has arrived at the venue of the meet. The PMO tweeted, “All set for the first meeting of the day! PM has arrived at the Venue.” It had earlier tweeted, “In a short while the PM will leave for the first meeting of the day with PM Najib Razak of Malaysia.”

 

8:00 am: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Myanmar on Tuesday by a special Air India plane on the first leg of his three-nation 10-day tour.

Modi yesterday held a meeting with Myanmarese President Thein Sein. During the 45-minute meeting, the leaders of the two countries focused on issues related to connectivity, cultural contacts and commercial ties.

Modi is also scheduled to hold talks with opposition leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The country is currently debating on whether or not Suu Kyi should be allowed to contest the upcoming 2015 Parliamentary Elections.

Prior to his visit, Modi had said yesterday, “ASEAN is at the core of our Act East Policy and at the centre of our dream of an Asian century, characterised by cooperation and integration.”

In an official statement, Modi said that he is looking forward to holding talks over the issue of how to take "our relationship to a new level, which will supplement our deepening bilateral ties with each member".

PM Modi will attend the 12th ASEAN-India Summit and the 9th East Asia Summit in Nay Pyi Taw on November 12 and 13 respectively.
