Major catch! Sabeel Ahmed - Al Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Toiba's recruiter held in Saudi Arabia

Dr Sabeel Ahmed, who was deported to India in 2008 after serving 18 months in jail in the United Kingdom for withholding information about his brother Kafeel Ahmed's plot to blow up Glasgow airport, has been arrested in Saudi Arabia, reports on Friday said.

Dubai: Dr Sabeel Ahmed, who was deported to India in 2008 after serving 18 months in jail in the United Kingdom for withholding information about his brother Kafeel Ahmed's plot to blow up Glasgow airport, has been arrested in Saudi Arabia, reports on Friday said.

If the reports are found to be true it would be a big catch, as Sabeel is believed to be associated with terror groups al Qaeda and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

He was assigned with the job of hiring recurits for the two terroist groups.

Originally from Bangalore, Sabeel was arrested in Liverpool on June 30 2007. His brother Kafeel Ahmed was diretcly involved in the 2007 Glasgow airport suicide bombing attempt.

Meanwhile, Indian secuirty agencies are contacting Saudi authorities to ascretain the facts. If the reports come true, New Delhi is expected to ask for Sabeel's extradition.

In June this year, the Delhi Police had told a court that Indians joining al Qaeda were moved by the 1992 Babri mosque demolition and 2002 Godhra riots and were committed to establish base of terror outfit al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

In its charge sheet filed against 17 accused, Special Cell of Delhi Police said for the purpose of jihad, some of them had gone to Pakistan and had met Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, LeT chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and several other dreaded terrorists.

Sabeel features in the chargesheet of Delhi Police which terms his absconding.
