Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala on Friday.
As per a IMD press release, monsoon rains have further advanced into entire south Arabian Sea, some parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area,s some parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.”
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, Karnataka; remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh, some more parts of central & north Bay of Bengal and southern parts of northeastern states during next 48 hours,” the IMD said.
Initially, Kerala was expecting the monsoon to arrive on May 30, but the MET department later revised the estimated date to June 5.
Prior to the onset of monsoon, Kerala had witnessed fairly widespread rainfall in the last 48 hours.
“Out of the 14 rainfall monitoring stations for monsoon onset over Kerala, more than 70 % of stations have reported rainfall higher than 2.5 mm for last consecutive two days,” the IMD said.
The monsoon is expected to hit North India by the end of June.
