New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon before his address to the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.

The two leaders shook hands, exchanged pleasantries and had a chat.

During this meeting, Modi referred to raising of the Kashmir issue by his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif while implying that the global body was not the right forum to discuss it.

Modi's reference to the issue in a meeting with the UN chief came a day after Sharif raked up the Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly here.

Official sources said Modi referred to Sharif's remarks on Kashmir in the meeting with the UN Secretary- General and implied that the UN was not the appropriate forum to raise it as it was a bilateral matter.

PM also undertook a tour of the Secretariat building at the United Nations headquarters. He was also accompanied by External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj and other officials.

The headquarters of the United Nations is a complex in New York City. The complex has served as the official headquarters of the United Nations since its completion in 1952.

It is located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, on spacious grounds overlooking the East River. Its borders are First Avenue on the west, East 42nd Street to the south, East 48th Street on the north and the East River to the east. The term "Turtle Bay" is occasionally used as a metonym for the UN headquarters or for the United Nations as a whole.

The United Nations has three additional, subsidiary, regional headquarters, or headquarters districts. These were opened in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1946, Vienna (Austria) in 1980, and Nairobi (Kenya) in 2011.

The United Nations Headquarters complex was constructed in stages with the core complex completed between 1948 and 1952. The headquarters occupies a site beside the East River, on 17 acres of land purchased from the foremost New York real estate developer of the time, William Zeckendorf.

The duties carried out by the UN Secretariat are as varied as the problems dealt with by the United Nations. These range from administering peacekeeping operations to mediating international disputes, from surveying economic and social trends and problems to preparing studies on human rights and sustainable development.

Secretariat staff also inform the world's communications media about the work of the United Nations; organize international conferences on issues of worldwide concern; and interpret speeches and translate documents into the Organization's official languages.

The Secretariat has around 43,000 staff members around the world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his day by visiting Ground Zero, the location of the 9/11 memorial and museum, on the second day of his five-day visit to the United States.

He also met New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, with whom he had discussed the issue of terrorism, and added that India has been consistent in combatting the menace for long.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who received a warm welcome upon his arrival in New York on Friday, is later scheduled to address the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
