New twist in Ishrat Jahan case: Draft note on affidavit amended by P Chidambaram goes missing

New Delhi: A key piece of document in the Ishrat Jahan case has gone missing.

As per a report in the Times of India, officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs have not been able trace a draft note which contained details of the changes made in the Ishrat Jahan affidavit when P Chidambaram was the home minister.

The legal opinion given on the matter by the then attorney general was also recorded in the draft note.

In 2009, the then Congress-led UPA government had in a controversial move filed a revised affidavit in the Gujarat High Court in which it had taken a U-turn from its previous position that Ishrat and three others suspects killed in the 2004 encounter were members of the Lashkar-e-Toiba terror group.

The row over Ishrat Jahan's alleged fake encounter erupted again after former home secretary GK Pillai revealed that the controversial second affidavit was amended by Chidambaram.

The BJP has demanded an investigation into the "flip-flop" in the Ishrat case.

Reacting to the revelation, Chidambaram had said that Pillai held equal responsibility for the second affidavit and that the first affidavit was misinterpreted.
