Pakistan envoy looks forward to better ties with India

Pakistan`s High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, on Thursday expressed hope that the relationship between New Delhi and Islamabad strengthens and both sides come closer in the coming days.

New Delhi: Pakistan`s High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, on Thursday expressed hope that the relationship between New Delhi and Islamabad strengthens and both sides come closer in the coming days.

"As far as the relation between India and Pakistan is concerned, you all know that the Prime Ministers of both nations met in Ufa, Russia. We expect that the relations between the two sides will strengthen post that meeting and we come closer to each other," he said while addressing the congregation after the prayers at Delhi`s Jama Masjid.

The Pakistan High Commissioner`s comment came on a day when the two nations are locked in a war of words after the hostilities along the border in Jammu and Kashmir escalated.

Briefing reporters on Pakistani shelling, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said India will not let its guard down. He, however, said India is committed to maintain peace and tranquility at the border.

Jaishankar said India had sought an end to cross border firing in the series of conversations with Pakistani authorities during the last two days, but there is no positive response.

The Pakistan Rangers violated the ceasefire twice on Wednesday, indulging in firing and mortar shelling in the Akhnoor sector.

A high-level meeting under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was held early today to discuss the security scenario in view of the continuous ceasefire violations by Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other top officials
