Chandigarh: Maintaining that Communist Party of India (Marxist) considers revelations made by the `Panama Papers` "very serious", CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Monday said if you look at the list of the people involved in this, it would be clear why things were not happening on the black money front, because the idea was not to expose such people."I have seen the report, CPM considers this as very serious revelations, but the authenticity of that will have to be established by the government," he said.
"However, this gives an indication why for two years the promise made by the Prime Minister during the election campaign that all the black money will be unearthed and brought back. He claimed then that we know who the account surveyor is and all the money will come. All of us were promised Rs 15 lakhs into our accounts, but for two years nothing has happened," said Yechury.
"If you look at the list that came out today, it becomes clear why things are not happening; means who are the people involved in this, and the idea not to expose such people," he added.
"If we think in the interest of the country, this is only the tip of the iceberg. This must be authenticated, a proper and fast inquiry will have to be conducted and if anything is illegal about this whole thing, then these monies should be recovered, brought back to the country and put to use for improving people`s welfare," he said, while interacting with reporters on the sidelines of a function organised to mark conclusion of the observations made at the centenary of birth anniversary of comrade Harkishan Singh Surjeet.
The centenary observations had to conclude on March 23, but March 23 is also the Martyrdom Day of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, so that had been postponed, he said."We are installing a statue of Comrade Surjeet today at the Bakhana Bhavan, which is the memorial for the Gadar party heroes that CPM had built," he said.
"We are meeting the party`s committee also and discussed the preliminary preparations for the forthcoming assembly elections," he added.The Panama papers reportedly feature over 500 Indians linked to offshore firms.
According to a report appearing in the Indian Express, the Panama papers feature names such as film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, to corporates including DLF owner KP Singh and nine members of his family, and the promoters of Apollo Tyres and IndiaBulls to Gautam Adani`s elder brother Vinod Adani. Two politicians who figure on the list are Shishir Bajoria from West Bengal and Anurag Kejriwal, the former chief of the Delhi unit of the Loksatta Party.
