The Prime Minister took to Twitter to share his message.
"Today we pay our tributes to the respected Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He is remembered as a great leader with an invaluable contribution to the nation. He always emphasised on education among the youth. He was a statesman, way ahead of his time and a profound thinker whose thoughts have been widely appreciated," the Prime Minister's message read.
Born in Calcutta on July 6, 1901, Mookerjee served as a cabinet minister under then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, before quitting the Congress party and founding the Jan Sangh.
