New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders across party lines on Monday extended sincere condolences to the family of the NCP leader and former Maharashtra home minister RR Patil.

The official twitter handle of the Prime Minister's Office ( PMO) tweeted Prime Minister Modi's condolences.

"My thoughts are with Shri RR Patil's family. Am saddened to know of his demise, which leaves a void in Maharashtra politics: PM @narendramodi," it posted.

"My condolences and prayers for the departed soul of Shri RR Patil ji (former Home Minister of Maharashtra)," BJP President Amit Shah posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also took to Twitter to condole Patil's death.

“He (RR Patil) will be given a state funeral. I will be present,” Fadnavis tweeted.

“RR Patil's demise irreparable loss to Maharashtra,” Fadnavis added.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar also echoed similar views and said that Maharashtra has lost one of the finest administrators.

"This is a great loss for the NCP and the state of Maharashtra. The state has lost one of the finest administrator at such an early age," Pawar said, ANI reported.

“RR Patil was a grass root worker, his sad demise is my personal & huge loss for Maharashtra politics. My deepest condolences to his family,” Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted.

“My Condolences to the Near & Dear Ones of Sh RR Patil ji ..May God give them the strength to endure the Untimely Loss!!.” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra tweeted. 

Patil, 57, who was Maharashtra's Home Minister during the 26/11 terror attacks, breathed his last at Lilavati Hospital today evening, where he was on life support.

The NCP leader was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital a couple of months ago and had undergone surgery for cancer, said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state spokesperson Nawab Malik.
