Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited an exhibition commemorating World War-I, organised by the Indian Armed Forces at Manekshaw Centre and said that he was touched to meet the descendants of some of the decorated soldiers.

PM spent about 45 minutes at the World War-I Commemoration Exhibition here, in which at least 74,187 Indian soldiers died, and was briefed about the valour and sacrifices of martyred defence personnel.

"The PM was given a detailed briefing on the First World War (1914-1918), and the contribution and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers in the War," Army officials said as per PTI.

Later PM Modi tweeting about the experience wrote: “The exhibition brings alive participation and bravery of Indian soldiers in various battlefields of this war across Europe, Africa and Asia.”

In another post he wrote: “Was touching to meet the descendants of some of these decorated soldiers,” adding, “I urge our youth to visit this exhibition to learn about the war in which nearly 74,000 of our men were martyred in far flung lands.”

He further tweeted: “We salute the sacrifice of each and every Indian soldier martyred in the war.”

The Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral RK Dhowan, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, and the Defence Secretary Shri RK. Mathur were present during the PM's visit.

The period between 2014 and 2018 is being commemorated as the WW-I centenary.
