PM Narendra Modi pays tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram

Jagjivan Ram, known popularly as Babuji, was an Indian independence activist and politician from Bihar.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid his respects to Dalit leader Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth anniversary and said that he was an inspirational figure who had dedicated his life to the upliftment of the poor and the marginalised.

"On his birth anniversary, tributes to the stalwart who dedicated his life to the upliftment of the poor & marginalised, Babu Jagjivan Ram," the Prime Minister tweeted.

Meanwhile, Vice President Hamid Ansari paid floral tributes at an event this morning commemorating the Dalit leader`s birth anniversary.

Jagjivan Ram, known popularly as Babuji, was an Indian independence activist and politician from Bihar.

He was instrumental in foundation of the All-India Depressed Classes League, an organisation dedicated to attaining equality for untouchables, in 1935 and was elected to Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1937, after which he organised the rural labour movement.

He also served as the Deputy Prime Minister (1977-79).
